The New Television Workshop Collection includes video art and experimental works that pre-date the Workshop and were produced or co-produced by WGBH. These programs include the 1968 production "Medium is the Medium" featuring Allan Kaprow, Nam June Paik, Otto Piene, James Seawright, Thomas Tadlocka and Aldo Tambellini and the "Very First Half Inch Video Tape" which documents experimental work being done with portable equipment in the early 1970's. Other related programs that pre-date the Workshop and are in the WGBH Archives include: "Mixed Bag,""What's Happening Mr. Silver," "Eye-to-Eye," "Jazz Images" and "I. M. Pei Essays." The bulk of the collection is comprised of moving image materials, mainly in various video formats. Additionally, paper-based documentation and photographs exist and detail both specific productions and the overall administrative workings of the Workshop. The Program Materials series, which is the heart of the collection, is made up primarily of moving image materials of video art works produced and/or broadcast in affiliation with the New Television Workshop at WGBH. Documentation and photographs, which relate to specific productions, have been included in this series. The Subject Files series contains documentation and photographs that relate to the administration of the Workshop and its overall operations. The Oral Histories series contains videotaped oral histories conducted with notable artists and designers by the Workshop as part of various granting initiatives. This series includes interviews conducted in 1999 with artists, producers, and critics involved with the New Television Workshop. The Reference Tapes series consists solely of videotapes, mainly screening copies. These include sample reels and works submitted to and/or reviewed by the Workshop (but not broadcast)
